In August 2008 we had to move a large number of sponsored children away from Bright Stars Primary School in Kyetume, so we looked at other schools in the area and decided that the best option was Kyetume Church of Ugand Primary School. This is a school that was founded many years ago by the Church and then taken over by the Government when they introduced Universal Primary Education in 1996. At some point the original school fell down in a strong wind and the parents got together to erect some small poor buildings on the site. The Government built another 2 classroom blocks and recently World Vision, together with the parents contributed to building a pit latrine (toilet). This is a poor school, the Government building program for schools in very very long, so each year they apply for new buildings and each year they are turned down! The Church own the land but do not provide help for the school, teachers are paid by the Government.
So what can Love in Action do? On 21st October 2008 Alan & Noah met with the School Management Committee and we have agreed that Love in Action would purchase 31 new school desks, this being the most urgent of the urgent needs. Funding for these desks will come from the donations that sponsors provide each month. (It is not as expensive to send a child to this school as we were paying at Bright Stars, so the difference will be used to buy items for the school each term.)
In coming terms buildings need renovating / extending, a kitchen / more toilets / offices / classrooms built, and text books provided. Love in Action will work together with the School Management Committe to see what can be done.
